We’ve just returned from a short visit in Berne. We climbed the Berner Münster – a Gothic Cathedral right in the middle of town, for a good view of the city.

The weather was not very good, but the climb up the narrow staircase was still worth the effort. One can walk around the towers on a platform 62 meters (203 feet) above ground. The view is stunning, although I wasn’t able to make a really good picture from the Bernese Alps. The weather just wasn’t good enough.

I was particularly fascinated by the architecture of Berne. They did an excellent job preserving the old city. No wonder it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Informations about the Cathedral of Berne

Here a bit more information for those who plan to visit the Berner Münster (Cathedral of Berne):

It is the largest and most important gothic cathedral with the tallest church tower (101m / 331ft.) in Switzerland. Construction began in 1421 and the last finishing touch, the steeple, was added between 1889 and 1893. The main building period took approximately 180 years. Master Builder Matthäus Ensinger, also the architect for the Strasbourg Cathedral, designed the plans for the church.

Unfortunately, the reformist removed and destroyed most of the artistic interior décor. Luckily, they left the stained glass windows intact and had nothing against the “Heavenly Court”, choir stalls, and the embellishment of the main portal. It was only 200 years after the Reformation that organ music filled the Cathedral.

It is a protestant church with services held on Saturday and Sunday. Concerts are given throughout the year.

The Cathedral of Berne is open daily for visits, occasional closings during weddings, funerals and maintenance possible.
