About the Stockhorn

The Stockhorn, one of the prominent mountain peaks near the city of Thun. The peak with 2190 meters above sea level is the highest mountain of the Stockhorn range and is located at the entrance to the Bernese Oberland.

This unique rock head is built from a vertical slab of rock, which gives it either a broad (stick) or more pointed (horn) shape, depending on your angle of view. On the panoramic viewing platform, located 400 meters above the valley floor, you have the unique opportunity to stand almost inside the vertical rock face. Opened in 2013, the panorama viewing platform, accessible via a 70-meter wheelchair-accessible tunnel through the rock, offers a fantastic view of Thun, Lake Thun, the Mittelland and, on a clear day, as far as the Jura, the Vosges and the Black Forest.

The Bernese Professor Johannes Müller was the first to climb to the summit in 1536. This adventure inspired him so much that he wrote a poem in Latin about his ascent, the “Stockhornias”, today part of “The Alpine Journal”.

These poems in turn triggered a wave of enthusiasm for mountaineering. Today, one can climb the Stockhorn far easier, from “the back” so to speak: on well-marked and prepared hiking and theme trails. Or even easier, by aerial cableway from Erlenbach in the Simmen Valley.

A special highlight of your visit to the Stockhorn is the ride with the cable car, which takes you in two sections over the Hinterstockensee to the summit. The magnificent view during the journey makes your excursion a wonderful one from the very beginning. So pack your camera and take a deep breath of the fresh mountain air.
