How to get from Interlaken to Grindelwald by train

Traveling by train in Switzerland is always a very special experience. The well-developed railway network is extremely reliable and punctual like Swiss clockwork. Modern trains equipped with all amenities take you to your desired destination without a care in the world. The fact that you don’t have to deal with the stress of finding your way over unfamiliar roads, getting stuck in traffic jams or worrying about parking with high fees is a good argument for traveling by train. 

But what makes train travel in Switzerland particularly appealing is that you can enjoy the beautiful views to the full.

The train journey to Grindelwald also takes you through the Swiss countryside with green meadows and forests surrounded by towering mountains. 

The Berner Oberland Bahn (BOB) takes you from Interlaken to Grindelwald in just over half an hour (34 minutes). If you plan to use the Grindelwald Terminal and the Eiger Express to get to the Jungfraujoch, it is good to know that the Terminal is the second last stop before the train continues on to Grindelwald to the station in the village.

Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald by train

All trains from Interlaken to Grindelwald depart from Interlaken Ost station. The journey takes about 34 minutes over a distance of 15km (9 miles) and is a direct connection without a change. From 6am to 11pm, 2 trains depart every hour. Usually always, 5 after the hour and 35. Please check the exact departure time yourself. 

Please note that the train that departs from Interlaken Ost consists of two parts that separate in Wilderswil. Half of the train goes to Grindelwald, while the other half goes to Lauterbrunnen. Please note the information on the platform.

Interlaken to Grindelwald Terminal

The Grindelwald Terminal is the newly built starting point for all excursions from Grindelwald to the Männlichen or the Eiger Glacier (Eigergletscher in german). Especially for excursions to the Jungfraujoch, the modern cable car is a highlight. It takes just over 15 minutes to get from Grindelwald Terminal to the Eiger Glacier, from where you can continue your journey to the Top of Europe on the Jungfrau Railway. 

From Interlaken, take the same train from Interlaken Ost station to Grindelwald. The terminal is the second last stop before the final stop in Grindelwald Dorf. The journey time from Interlaken to the Grindelwald terminal is approx. 29 minutes.

Bus from Interlaken to Grindelwald

There are no buses from Interlaken to Grindelwald during the day, which is not necessary thanks to the two train connections per hour.

Only the last connection of the day, a little after 11 pm, is provided by the Grindelwald Bus Company. 

The bus line 312 departs from Interlaken Ost and has two stops in Matten (which is close to Interlaken) before continuing on to Wilderswil and down the valley to Grindelwald. The journey time is approx. 38 minutes.
